For Arch Treks Safaris, the outdoors has always been more than terrain and trails. It is a living space for connection, resilience, and transformation. Over the past five years, this belief has taken on deeper meaning through a sustained partnership with KILELE Health Association one that has redefined hiking as a platform for health advocacy, healing, and community engagement.
Since 2020, Arch Treks Safaris has worked alongside KILELE Health, through their program KILELE Challenge, to guide intentional hikes across Kenya, bringing together cancer survivors, caregivers, health advocates, and other supporters. What unites them was not distance or altitude, but a shared purpose: using movement and nature to advance conversations around cancer prevention, survivorship, and quality of life.
These hikes often unfold across varied landscapes, each carefully planned to prioritize safety, inclusion, and accessibility. Unlike conventional adventure hikes driven by speed or summits, the KILELE Health hikes are deliberately people-centred. The trails become spaces where cancer survivors rebuild strength after treatment, reconnect with their bodies, and restore physical confidence. Along the way, lived experiences are shared openly, highlighting the urgent need for prevention, early detection, and supportive care.
Conversations around early screening, stigma, prevention, and community responsibility flow naturally along the forest paths and open trails.
“Guiding these hikes require more than technical expertise,” says James Kariuki, Lead Guide at Arch Treks Safaris. “It means understanding the emotional weight people carry, ensuring safety, and allowing the environment to support healing. The mountain has a way of levelling everyone remindings us that we are walking together.”
Over time, these hikes quietly build a community as the trails became a place of reunion. For Arch Treks, guiding these journeys requires attentiveness to emotional and physical needs, adjusting pace when necessary, and creating an atmosphere where everyone feels supported.
This consistency normally lays the foundation for what would later become the Mt. Kenya Summit. By the time preparations begin for the high-altitude summit, participants are not strangers to one another or to the outdoors, they are a community shaped by months of shared steps, mutual trust, and a common purpose. The mountain was becomes not just a physical challenge, but a continuation of a journey already underway.
The five-year partnership between Arch Treks Safaris and KILELE Health Association underscores a powerful truth: adventure, when guided with intention, can drive meaningful social impact. The outdoors can hold difficult conversations, restore confidence, and strengthen communities especially when those spaces are created with care.
Looking ahead, Arch Treks Safaris is excited to continue this journey with KILELE Health Association, guiding more purposeful hikes that combine adventure with advocacy. Each trail is an opportunity to raise awareness, support survivors, and create lasting impact proving that every step taken in nature can move communities closer to a future free from cancer. Physical, social, mental and emotional wellness are also major pillars underscored in these hikes.
