    MOUNTAIN CLIMBING
    EAST AFRICAN MOUNTAINS
The main East African mountains are Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare Range which are located wholly within Kenya to the north of Nairobi. Mt. Elgon lies astride the Uganda-Kenya border. Mt. Kilimanjaro extends along Tanzania's northern boundary with Kenya while Mt. Meru is in northern Tanzania. The Ruwenzori range stretches between Lakes Edward and Albert on the Uganda-Congo border, and farther south the Virunga mountains extend along the continuous borders of Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo.

Arch Treks and Safaris will provide you with some thrilling opportunities to experience the best of an African mountain climbing adventure . The diverse range of vegetation types, wildlife habitats, amazing terrain and stunning sceneries one encounters will create a sense of awe. The cheerful and seemingly superhuman porters, the sweat and tears that go into a successful trek to the summit form part of the extraordinary sense of achievement one experiences while standing on the summit and watching the sun rise over Africa.
Our formula for success is the use of professional guides, well paid porters and crew, going slower, giving enough rest between stages and acclimatization time. What you eat and where you sleep is also very important. You can discover a great deal about yourself through these adventures, but only if the experience is of extremely high quality and professionally organized. As such, we do what we know we are good at; delivering superb results. You don't need to be super human. Average fitness and determination is all it takes. Itineraries can be tailored to suit ones treks and climbs.

Our trips have personalized itineraries without set departure dates. We organize tailor-made walking safaris on East African mountains for groups and individuals who are looking for mountain wilderness adventure. We have an experienced mountain team who will do their best to ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable as possible. The team helps you experience high altitude trekking amongst rugged peaks and glaciers safely.

    ABOUT MT. KENYA
Mt. Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro. The highest peaks of the mountain are Batian at 5,199 metres (17,057 ft), Nelion at 5,188 metres (17,021 ft) and Point Lenana at 4,985 metres (16,355 ft). Mt. Kenya is located in central Kenya, just south of the equator and 150 kilometers from Nairobi. Batian was climbed in 1899 by the British mountaineer, Halford Mackinder, the first man known to have been done so. Mackinder named the three peaks after Maasai leaders. Nelion, the second highest peak but a much harder climb, was not ascended until 1929 by Eric Shipton.

There are several routes up the mountain. A team of guides, porters and cooks will accompany you and perform any menial tasks, allowing you to enjoy the experience free from the burden of carrying heavy gear, gathering water, finding your way up the mountain and making meals.

Itineraries can be tailored to suit ones requirements with varying durations of between 3 and 10 days trekking to the summits with camping or banda accommodation options along the way.

4 DAYS:  SIRIMON ROUTE UP - CHOGORIA ROUTE DOWN
This program is designed to suit people with very little time, i.e. only 3 nights on the mountain. This creative climb joins two of the most scenic routes up the mountain i.e. Sirimon and Chogoria, producing a remarkably diverse and spectacular trek. Sirimon, coming off the west of the mountain, passes through the dry side of the mountain with its giant trees and rocky terrain, while the descent onto the Chogoria path, is remarkably different, with its lush bamboo and highland forests. The final night time ascent of Pt. Lenana can be as difficult as any ascent in East Africa, but the rest of the trek is generally considered easier than either Kilimanjaro or Ruwenzori.
    DAY 1:  NAIROBI - SIRIMON GATE - OLD MOSES CAMP ( 3,300m), 3-4hrs, 9km, 680m ASCENT

Kilimanjaro is also visible on the horizon. Descend to Minto's hut for a full breakfast. After a short rest, descend to Mt. 6 - 7 DAYS:  BATIAN NORTH FACE TECHNICAL CLIMBING (JUNE TO OCTOBER)
DAY 1: NAIROBI - NANYUKI TOWN - SIRIMON GATE - OLD MOSES CAMP
Leave Nairobi at 6.45am for a 3.5 hour trip to Nanyuki where you will link up with the porters and make final preparations and continue with the journey to the mountain park gate. With porter support, trek for 3hrs to Old Moses Camp at 3,300m. Diner and overnight at the Old Moses Camp or you may opt to sleep in bandas.

DAY 2:  OLD MOSES TO SHIPTON'S CAMP (4,200m)
After breakfast proceed across Ontulilli River straight to Liki North River, to the top ridge and down to Mackinder Valley and Shipton's Camp at 4,200m. This is a 17kms walk which takes 6 - 7hours, with picnic lunch served on the way. You have the option of staying in the hut, or sleep in your own tents. The tents offer a bit of privacy and quiet from the often busy hut. Either way, our cook will use the hut's facilities and we will take our meals at tables and benches inside the hut. This night you will be joined by the technical guide/s who will do a briefing and a kit/technical gear check.

    DAY 3:  SHIPTONS CAMP 4,200m
Early morning after breakfast you have an acclimatization walk to Pt. Lenana (4895m). Rest after lunch and at 3pm, climb a short route on either Pt. Peter (this is also technical) or Pt. Dutton. You can also opt to rest and spare the energy. In either case, you also prepare for the climb of Batian the following morning.

DAY 4:  SUMMIT ATTEMPT - ASCENT OF BATIAN (5,199m) BY THE NORTH FACE STANDARD ROUTE
Starting before dawn, usually between 4 and 5 am, take a 40 minute walk to the climbing base. To ascent Batian by the North Face Standard Route, you may climb the first couple of pitches by headlamp. The route initially follows a wide contour which you ascend for some 7 pitches, never harder than 5.7. A bit of easy scrambling brings you to the amphitheater, a small basin of easy rock partly way up the route. Ideally you arrive here by about 7.30am and enjoying a late breakfast and a short break. Above this is the crux of the route, Firmin's Tower. There are about 3 difficult pitches, all fairly short, but all in the 5.8 to 5.9 range. Above this, easier terrain leads to a few more pitches and finally, the west ridge.

From this point, you continue on easy, but still exposed, rock to Shipton's Notch, a prominent gash in the summit ridge. Another pitch, then mixed 4th and easy 5th class rock leads to the airy summit of Batian. Descent is by the same route, with a few minor variations. If you are quick, you can arrive back in Shipton's Camp before evening dusk. If slow, you might not be able to go up and down the same day. Hence, you may overnight at the Top Hut about 5,188m (Nelion).

DAY 5:  OPTIONAL EXTRA DAY AT THE SUMMIT
Please plan for an Extra day in case you spend the night at the Top Hut.

DAY 6:  SHIPTONS CAMP TO CHOGORIA  BANDAS
After spending the night at Shipton’s you will use the Chogoria route, because we believe it is the most scenic. The trek out begins with a climb up to Simba Col (where porters once swore they saw a lion, hence the name) then a quick descent to the Hall Tarns. From here you follow the backbone of a ridge, overlooking the beautiful Gorges Valley.

Loosing elevation, you leave the high moorlands and enter into the forest belt which surrounds Mt. Kenya. As you approach the rustic cabins of Meru Mount Kenya Lodge (your destination for the night), you are likely to see cape buffalo, as well as bush buck or water buck, and tracks of other wild animals.

The Bandas, as the cabins are called, are a welcome luxury after your stay on the mountain. With hot showers (after the water is wood-fire heated) and a fine evening fire, you enjoy dinner and the thick, fragrant air of the jungly lower elevations. In the evening, you can make a short hike with your guide, looking for additional wildlife and exploring the immediate area around our cabins.

DAY 7:  CHOGORIA BANDAS - NAIROBI
There is a rough road which leads up to the lodge. You may choose to hike the first hour or so, enjoying the thick bamboo forest. You often see elephant tracks and signs of many other wild animals. After a bit of time, a 4x4 off road vehicle catches up with you. You use the vehicle to drive to Chogoria town on the east side of Mt. Kenya. Once on the main road, you switch to a more comfortable vehicle, for an additional 4 hour drive to Nairobi. Back to a Nairobi hotel, you enjoy the comforts of civilization and a fine dinner or get transferred to the airport for a flight out.

    ABOUT MT. KILIMANJARO
    6 DAYS:  MARANGU ROUTE
    7 DAYS:  MACHAME ROUTE
    8 DAYS:  LEMOSHO ROUTE
    ABOUT MT. KILIMANJARO
Mt. Kilimanjaro was formed during the most recent faulting of the Rift valley two to three million years ago, an event that also led to the formation of Mt. Kenya. Kilimanjaro was certainly an active volcano 100,000 years ago when the the crater below Kibo Peak was formed. The glaciers around the peak probably began to form some 11,700 years ago. However, it is thought that due to global warming they will have melted within another 20 years. In the sixth century, Chinese sailors returned home with tales of a great inland mountain, but Kilimanjaro remained something of an enigmatic legend to non-Africans well into the nineteenth century.

In 1848, the German missionary, Johannes Rebmann, while venturing inland in a bid to convert the local tribes to Christianity, sighted the snow-capped mountain from Tsavo but his report was met with ridicule. It was not until 1861 when Dr. Otto Kersten and Baron Karl Klaus von der Decken scaled the mountain to a height of 4,300m. The first Europeans to reach the summit were Hans Meyer and Ludwig Purtscheller in 1889. Mawenzi peak was first climbed in 1912.

The mountain has retained a legendary and almost mystical aura throughout the twentieth century. Mt. Kilimanjaro's huge snow-capped summit dome, rising high above the surrounding savanna, is one of Africa's all time classic images.

It is the highest free standing volcano in the world and the tallest in Africa, at an attitude of 5,895m (19,340ft). While it is acknowledged that to summit the “mountain of greatness” is not easy, it is very achievable.

    6 DAYS:  MARANGU ROUTE
This is the easiest route to ascend Mt. Kilimanjaro. The summit glaciers, screes, cliffs, afro-alpine moorland then forests lead down to the cultivated foothills. The Marangu route takes you at a gentle pace through these dramatically different zones. For the ascent to Uhuru Peak from Kibo Hut, a very early start is made since the scree is easier to climb when frozen and the views from the crater rim at dawn can be spectacular.

Ski sticks are useful when ascending the scree to the summit. Accommodation on the mountain is in comfortable huts. You will require a sleeping bag. This is a tough walking trip but within the limits of a fit individual used to walking. An extra day for acclimatization to the altitude can be spent at Horombo. From Horombo there are various walks to enjoy.

Best climbing seasons are in November to March and May to September every year.

DAY 1:  MOSHI OR ARUSHA HOTEL - MARANGU GATE (1,800m) - MANDARA HUT (2,900m)
Transfer from your hotel to the park headquarters at Marangu gate for registration. From the gate, you ascend a cleared ridge trail, formerly a vehicle track to Mandara Hut. The cleared trail is the fastest way to Mandara, but opportunities to see wildlife or enjoy the forest are limited due to the heavy foot traffic. An alternative is to ascend along the parallel forest trail and descend on the main trail. The forest trail branches off to the left, a few minutes after the gate, and follows the edge of a stream through the undergrowth. About halfway (1.5 hours from the gate), you can choose to cross the stream and rejoin the main trail, or continue on the forest trail. Lunch will be at this spot. Both trails continue on opposite sides of the stream, merging about one hour before Mandara Hut.

    DAY 2:  MANDARA HUT (2,900m) - HOROMBO HUT (3,657m)
From Mandara Hut the trail passes through a short stretch of forest and skirts the base of Maundi Crater, crosses a meadow and a wooded stream, then emerges into grassland. It is well worth the short detour to scramble up to the rim of Maundi Crater for a superb view of the mountain and its surroundings. The trail crosses numerous moor land ravines before ending at Horombo Hut, which is set in a rocky valley with a fine stand of giant scenecios or groundsels. Lunch is served on the way. Dinner and overnight at the huts.

DAY 3:  HOROMBO HUT (ACCLIMATIZATION DAY)
Horombo hut is a village of huts perched on a small plateau, with buildings similar to Mandara, but with a total capacity of 150 climbers. Normally bustling with hikers, guides, porters and with an atmosphere of adventure and excitement. You will meet both ascending and descending hikers here. This extra day and night at Horombo is for additional acclimatization. A hike towards the Mawenzi hut, passing the Zebra Rocks on the way (about 3 hours up and 1.5 hours down), is strongly recommended. This hike will further assist with the process of acclimatization. Remember to drink enough water and move slowly. All meals for the day are provided at the hut. Retire to bed early and get a last good night's rest.

    DAY 4:  HOROMBO HUT (3,657m) - KIBO HUT (4,750m)
The eleven kilometers path seems rather steep at first as it bends north west and up through the thinning vegetation of the moors. It takes 4 to 5 hours of tough walk, a gradual but relentless uphill slog to round off what has already been a fairly wearing day. From Horombo Hut there are two trails to the Saddle. The right fork is very stony and eroded and is the most direct route to the Saddle and Mawenzi. From the Saddle (about 2 hours from Horombo), there are trails to Mawenzi Hut (1.5 hours) or Mawenzi Tarn Hut (2.5 hours) and across the length of the Saddle to Kibo Hut (3 hours). The left fork from Horombo Hut is an easier trail and emerges on the Saddle much closer to Kibo and about one kilometer from Kibo Hut. Dinner and overnight at the hut.

    DAY 5:  SUMMIT ATTEMPT
Wake up around 5.30am and after a breakfast of tea and biscuits, you will start off into the night and this is where the going gets really tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman's point (5,681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort, probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the Kili shuffle and move slowly. From Gillman’s 1 hour climb to the summit point, you will normally encounter snow all the way up to Uhuru peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa and experience total exhilaration and satisfaction - you made it. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend, taking photographs, before the 3 hour descent back to Kibo hut. After a short rest you gather all your gear you left behind for the ascent and head down to Horombo Hut (3 hours) for your overnight. The return to Horombo Hut will seem surprisingly fast compared to the ascent. The total time spent walking on this day is around 14 hours, so be prepared for a very tough day. Later in the evening, you enjoy your last dinner (with soft drinks and beer for sale at the camp office) on the mountain and a well-earned sleep, filled with memories and stirring emotions.

DAY 6:  HOROMBO HUT - MARANGU GATE
After breakfast, you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara Hut, down to the Marangu gate. It is strongly recommended not to pay your porters any tips until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely. At Marangu gate, you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman's Point (5,685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5,895m), receive gold certificates. You now drive back for a long overdue hot shower, dinner and celebrations! Overnight in your hotel.

    7 DAYS:  MACHAME ROUTE
This program travels the scenic Machame route, with some game-viewing and bird watching opportunities along the first days’ paths. Then it's up across the Shira plateau through the Grand Baranco Canyon and on to the top. If all goes as planned, you will reach Stella Point at dawn, with a chance to continue around Kibo’s rim to the summit, Uhuru Peak. Fit to trek?. The Machame route is a strenuous, but not a technical climb and no mountain-climbing experience is necessary. But there’s no avoiding the steep ascents and high altitudes that make robust physical fitness (and a minimum age of 16 years) a prerequisite for this trip. You’ll want to consult your physician before undertaking this unforgettable adventure.

DAY 1:  MACHAME GATE TO MACHAME CAMP
    Machame Gate - (1,640m or 5,380ft)
    Machame Hut - (2,850m or 9,350ft)
    Trekking - 5 to 6 hours
    Distance - 11km or 7 miles
    Zone - Rain forest

Drive to the gate of Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. The journey passes through the village of Machame, which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain. You now leave the park gate and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge. Lower down, the trail can be muddy and slippery. Gaiters and trekking poles are a good idea here. You continue a short distance up to Machame Camp.

DAY 2:  MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP
    Shira Camp Two - (3,810m or 12,500ft)
    Trekking - 5 to 6 hours
    Distance - 5km or 3 miles
    Zone - Low alpine

After breakfast, you leave the glades of the rain forest and continue on an ascending path, crossing the little valley walking along a steep rocky ridge, covered with heather, until the ridge ends. The route now turns west onto a river gorge. Time for rest with dinner and overnight at the Shira campsite.

DAY 3:  SHIRA CAMP TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP (3,976m)
    Trekking - 8 to 9 hours
    Distance - 10km or 6 miles
Zone - Low to high alpine

From the Shira Plateau, you continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As you continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, you come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 4,876m (15,997 feet). You now continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 3860m (12,664 feet). Here you rest, enjoy dinner and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

DAY 4:  BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
    Elevation - 13,000 to 13,100ft
    Trekking - 4 to 5 hours
    Distance - 5km
    Zone - Alpine desert

After breakfast, you leave Barranco and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall, to the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a short day meant for acclimatization. A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo, with superb vistas of the Southern Icefields. The terrain changes to scree, with pockets of lush vegetation in sheltered hollows, and there is only a short distance to our camp at Karanga Camp (13,100 feet), the last water point on the way to the summit.

DAY 5:  KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP
    Elevation - 13,100 to 15,300ft
    Trekking - 4 to 5 hours
    Distance - 4km
    Zone - Alpine desert

After breakfast, you leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. You continue up to the Barafu Hut. At this point, you have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Here you make camp, rest, enjoy dinner and prepare for the summit day. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this position. The remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the early morning final ascent.

DAY 6:  BARAFU CAMP TO SUMMIT TO MWEKA HUT
    Elevation - 15,300ft to 19,345ft (and down to 10,000ft)
    Trekking - 7 to 8 hours ascent / 4 to 6 hours descent
    Distance - 5km ascent / 12km descent
    Zone - Arctic
You start the ascent by torchlight at about midnight so that you can be up on the crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig-zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (18,800 feet), in about five or six hours. You will rest there for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. If you are still feeling strong, you can make the two hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (19,345 feet), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast from the summit as you now descend continuing straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, you enjoy your last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.

DAY 7:  MWEKA CAMP TO MOSHI
    Elevation - 10,000 to 5,400ft
    Trekking - 3 to 4 hours
    Distance - 10km
    Zone - Rain forest

After breakfast, continue the descent down to the Mweka Park Gate to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). From the gate, a private vehicle transfers you back to the hotel in Moshi.

    Package includes;
  • Private transport from Moshi hotel to mountain gate or trail head
  • Services of professional English speaking guides

    8 DAYS:  LEMOSHO ROUTE
The Lemosho route is regarded as one of the prettiest routes on Kilimanjaro. You begin from the west, trekking in the fertile rainforest until you reach the wildflowers of the heath eco-system. Approaching from the west, you cross one of most beautiful areas on Kilimanjaro, the Shira Plateau, before traversing the mountain along the southern circuit. The total time on the mountain is 8 days. We recommend hiking the 8 day Lemosho route as it provides plenty of time for acclimatization and it also keeps the daily hiking distances reasonable.

DAY 1:  MOSHI HOTEL TO LONDOROSSI NATIONAL PARK GATE - FOREST CAMP
    Elevation - 7,800ft to 9,500ft
    Trekking - 3 to 4 hours
    Distance - 6km
    Zone - Rain forest

Transport from the hotel is arranged to the park entrance (2,000m). Here you will complete entry formalities. Then drive to the Lemosho trailhead (another hour to reach the trailhead). Upon arrival at the trailhead, you have lunch, then commence trekking through undisturbed forest which winds up at the first campsite. The climb goes through the rain forest. It is a 4 - 5 hours walk to the first camp, through verdant scenery. The forest is alive with bird life, and some elephant and other wildlife may be seen. Dinner and overnight at Mti Mkubwa camp.

DAY 2:  FOREST CAMP TO SHIRA CAMP 1
    Elevation - 9,500ft to 11,500ft
    Trekking - 5 to 6 hours
    Distance - 8km
    Zone - Moorland

The trek to Shira One camp is about 7 miles and takes 4 to 5 hours. About half an hour after leaving Mti Mkubwa camp, you emerge from the rain forest on to alpine meadow. This is a stunning climb, with splendid views of the peaks and of the plains below. The vegetation is also quite spectacular, especially higher up, where giant lobelias may be seen. Higher still, the vegetation becomes thinner, and the effects of altitude, commonly experienced as shortness of breath, may begin to be felt. Dinner and overnight at Shira One (3,400m).

DAY 3:  SHIRA CAMP 1 TO SHIRA 2 TO MOIR HUT / SHIRA HUT
    Elevation - 11,500ft to 13,800ft
    Trekking - 5 to 7 hours
    Distance - 14km
    Zone - Moorland

An easy day to help with acclimatization and explore the volcanic rock formations of Shira Plateau. You walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral before reaching the next camp at Shira Hut (12,600 feet). This campsite has stunning views, close to the glaciated dome of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau. The views from here of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. Shira is one of the highest plateaus on earth.

DAY 4:  MOIR HUT TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP
    Elevation - 13,800ft to 13,000ft
    Trekking - 4 to 6 hours
    Distance - 7km
    Zone - Semi desert

This is an acclimatization day. You walk from the camp up to Lava Tower at 4,600m before descending down to Baranco camp at 3,945m. From the Shira Plateau, you continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As you continue, your direction changes to the south east towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth". Shortly after the tower, you come to the second junction which brings you up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. You continue down to the Barranco Hut at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here you rest, enjoy dinner and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.

DAY 5:  BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP
    Elevation - 13,000ft to 13,100ft

2 DAYS & 1 NIGHT:  ABERDARES TREK - SATIMA SUMMIT VIA SHAMATA AND RHINO GATES
2 DAYS & 1 NIGHT:  ABERDARES TREK - ELEPHANT HILL VIA NJABINI TO KINANGOP PEAK
    ABOUT THE ABERDARES
This is a 90 km long ridge that lies between Mt. Kenya and the Great Rift Valley and rises to a height of 4,001 metres. It was named by the Scottish explorer, Joseph Thompson in 1884 after Lord Aberdare, then president of the Royal Geographical Society.

Dense mountain forests cover the middle reaches of the mountains. The highest point is Satima at 4,001m and home to Kenya's highest waterfall, the Karuru Falls highest and tallest in Kenya, Other major waterfalls are Chania and Gura. The Aberdares, declared a national park in 1950 offers exceptional hiking terrain and stunning views.

The Aberdare National Park is part of the Aberdare Mountain Range, a fascinating region of Kenya which, according to traditional Kikuyu folklore, are one of the homes of Ngai (God). The Aberdare rain forest is a vital water catchment area that feeds the entire local and Nairobi water supply needs. Deep ravines cut through the forested inclines, through which hidden trout streams flow and waterfalls cascade down hundreds of feet of rock face. Mountain ranges and peaks soar to around 12,900ft (4,001meters), giving way to deep V-shaped valleys with streams and rivers cascading over spectacular waterfalls.
The Aberdares are a water catchment area that feeds two of the largest dams supplying over 95% of their water i.e. Ndakaini dam in the Thika region and Sasumua dam near Njabini town. The Aberdares slopes are also one of the major source of vegetables supplied to Nairobi, and possibly the most significant source of the second most important staple food consumed in Nairobi, the irish potato.
Karuru Falls is the highest and tallest in waterfall in Kenya and plunges in three steps to a total drop of 273m. The sight breathtaking. Other major waterfalls are Chania and Gura. These are a must see for landscape and nature lovers.

Above the forest is a belt of bamboo, a favourite haunt of the Bongo, a rare and elusive forest antelope. At 10,000ft the bamboo gives way to moorlands, home to eland, spotted and melanistic serval cats. This is an ideal place for walking, picnics, camping and trout fishing in the rivers. The moorlands thickets are home of Bush Duiker and the Black Rhino. In the forest are red Duiker, Suni, Bushbuck, Elephants, Buffalo, Giant Forest Hog, Leopard and Colobus Monkey. Bird life is abundant and varied. Perhaps the most conspicuous group is the Sunbirds, Crowned Eagles and Silver Checked Hornbills. Birds of prey are specially interesting and crowned.
There is also a variety of accommodation including the famous Treetops Lodge where princess Elizabeth visited in February 1952 and and left as Queen Elizabeth II of the British Empire.

Others are camp and picnic sites, bandas and the Ark, a lodge built in the shape of Noah's Ark. Night game viewing is provided by the lodges in the salient area of the park with excellent sightings of elephant, buffalo, lion and rhino, drawn to the waterholes and saltlicks each evening.

2 DAYS & 1 NIGHT:  ABERDARES TREK - SATIMA SUMMIT VIA SHAMATA AND RHINO GATES
DAY1:  NAIROBI TO RHINO GATE OUT SHAMATA GATE

Leave Nairobi at 6.30am and drive for 3 hours to Nyeri. Here link up with the guide and porters and then drive to the KWS Park headquarters where you will be assigned a ranger to escort you to the mountain. Drive towards Nyahururu then turn off to the Rhino gate. Register and keep driving for 12km to Chebuswa or the Twin Peaks (3,365m). Park the vehicle at some point and start walking.

From this point, animal trails ascend up the lower moorlands normally covered with alpine giant heather, which sadly gets ravaged by forest fires from time to time, leaving behind charred sticks. As you work your way further southwards, this vegetation gradually gives way to tussock grass in marshes. Breath-taking landscapes soon unfold ahead as interesting rock formations including the Dragon’s Teeth come into view, standing tall on the plateau. Depending on your level of fitness, it takes about 2 hours to trek from the Twin Peaks to the Dragon’s Teeth.

As you climb higher past these rocks on marshes, the trail contours along ridges until Satima comes into view. A short steep climb gets you to the summit at 4,000m taking about 3 to 4 hours and 8km from the Twin Peaks. Walk down back to the car and drive to Shamata gate campsite for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2:  SHAMATA GATE TO NYERI

After breakfast , explore the surroundings, taking a walk to the waterfalls. Later using the Shamata gate, leave the park, dropping off the ranger escort, drive to Nyeri and then Nairobi to end the safari.

2 DAYS & 1 NIGHT:  ABERDARES TREK - ELEPHANT HILL VIA NJABINI TO KINANGOP PEAK
The Elephant Hill on the southern end of the Aberdares Ranges, about 90km north of Nairobi, is an ideal location for a day hike especially if you’re preparing for the more challenging Mt. Kenya or Mt. Kilimanjaro climbs.
DAY 1:  ELEPHANT HILL - ELEPHANT’S RUMP CAMPSITE

Leave Nairobi at 8am in the morning for the 2 hour drive to the Njabini Forest Gate that marks the beginning of the Elephant Hill climb. Although the hill can be ascended from various starting points, the best approach is the Njabini Forest Station (former Kinangop South Forest Station), about 4km from Njabini shopping centre. The hike up the hill takes 4 to 5 hours after starting at an altitude of 2500m at the forest station. The first few kilometres are over relatively flat forest covered terrain, with occasional herd of cattle grazing in the forest glades, a testament to the growing push by human settlements into the receding forest boundary. On ascending further up, the forest gives way to the bamboo zone. The narrow trail, punctuated every few steps by treacherous mud, at this point is covered by a canopy of towering bamboo with only filtered light getting through, as you continue trudging up the now steeper path. The occasional elephant footprint and droppings from various animal species are a constant reminder that you are in a game reserve teeming with wildlife, with the armed escort as your only shield from possible danger.

After what seems like hours of plodding though the muck and fighting the urge to just throw in the towel and turn around, the trail finally levels off and the bamboo thins out as you get to the alpine zone, characterized by the stunning array of outlandish flora like giant lobelia, senecio, tussock grass, and giant heather among others; a real feast for botany enthusiasts. Amazing views of the surrounding countryside including the nearby Sasumua dam down below to your right, and the distant Ndakaini dam to your left, awaits those who make it this far. You are now at the Elephant’s Rump, also known as the point of despair. This where we will put up the tents for dinner and overnight.
  • Walking - 5 hours
  • Accommodation - Camping in a basic camp site inside the Aberdare National Park
  • Meals - Lunch and dinner prepared by our chef
  • DAY 2:  ELEPHANT’S RUMP - KINAGOP PEAK (3,600m) - NAIROBI

After a chilly and probably wet night, breakfast is served in the morning. Later continue with the hike that goes over slightly rocky terrain at an altitude of over 3,400m, with the temperature dropping significantly, as you pick your way across the Elephant’s Back. The trail first descends into a clamp of trees before turning back upwards out of the small valley. It then gets pretty steep as it meanders past gnarled giant heather trees adorned with spanish moss offering handholds when you need to pull yourself up the slope. After what seems like another endless climb, the trail mercifully levels off to give you your first view of the summit. You’ll recognize it by the saddle between two knolls. Once you traverse the Elephant’s Back to reach this saddle, the summit at 3600m above sea level is to your left, a short 5 minute climb. The distinctive Kinangop peak, the second highest point on the Aberdares can be seen to the north. Avoid regretting later for turning back after getting so close. You will be at the summit as long as you can bear the cold. The descent is just as trying as the ascent, taking a big toll on the knees, and another 3 to 4 hours to the Forest station. Depart after Lunch for Nairobi.

    TOURS & SAFARIS
    TOURS & SAFARIS
Safari is a Swahili word for journey and there are few experiences that rival a journey through the wilderness, watching wild animals in their natural habitats in the worlds most famous game parks, game reserves and private sanctuaries in Kenya and the rest of East Africa.

Arch Treks & Safaris will help you to organize your safaris and have a chance to follow the wild game, from the spectacular wildbeest migration to the thousands of pink flamingoes in some Kenyan lakes; from the big five to the endangered African wild dog and the rare Hirora among others and also experiencing the cultural practices of the Masai and Samburu people.

Kenya boasts more than 80 major species of animals and over 1,000 species of birds. The country has a great variety to offer even for the most demanding visitor making it one of Africa's leading safari destinations.

    CAMPING SAFARIS
These cover a variety of discounted safaris and have a lower price tag because accommodation is in a rustic camp in designated campsites with some modern conveniences, such as a bed, and hot showers as our basic safari accommodation. 1 DAY:  MT. LONGONOT DAY TRIP
Situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, Mt. Longonot is a dormant volcano that last erupted in the 1800s. It is located only 60km from Nairobi. This day tour is one of the favorite places to go for hiking or mountain climbing. Situated on the floor of the Great Rift Valley, Mt. Longonot is a strato-volcano thought to have last erupted in the 1860s. It rises to a height of 2,776m. Mt. Longonot has a forest of small trees that cover the crater floor and small steam vents are found spaced around the walls of the crater. The mountain is home to various species of wildlife, notably zebra, giraffe, buffaloes and eland.

Like all good uphill hikes it will lull you in to a sense of false security with a slow gentle rise to the first peak. This gives you a chance to get your lungs and limbs freed up for the second section, which is the most awesome. At the end of each section there is a rest point where you can prepare yourself for the next part of your trek. You will have started early to avoid the heat of the sun but by the time you reach the end of the second section you will have generated your own heat. This hike is easy, but is achievable by people of average fitness. An indication of the fitness required is that most school children of the age 14 and 15 take this climb while attending school in Nairobi.
Once you have finished the second section there is another rest bite of slightly less demanding terrain, before making the final climb on the fourth section. This again is a demanding section, though not as demanding as the second section. As you heave yourself over the rim of the crater your reward is the awesome sight of Naivasha and the Great Rift Valley and you know that it was all worthwhile. The mountain can be navigated in two ways; a straight ascent to the top and back down or reaching the top and circumnavigating the crater rim. The crater has a circumference of 7.2km the walking trail runs from the park entrance up to the crater rim, and continues in a loop encircling the crater. The hiking is about 8 - 9 km long but very steep, which takes around 3 to 4 hours.

    1 DAY:  HELL'S GATE
The best expedition in the Naivasha area is the hike through the spectacular Njorowa Gorge, also known as Hell's Gate. Thought to have been formed by a river spilling out of Lake Naivasha in the past, this magnificent gorge with sheer cliffs rising to 150m and renowned for its wildlife is designated a National Park. The cliffs have deservedly become famous for their hard and serious climbing. Fischer's Tower, the small pinnacle at the entrance to the gorge, provides a variety of short fine climbs on good rock.

As a sanctuary, special care must be taken not to disturb nesting birds; this rarely poses any problems. The main cliffs face east, so climbing in the morning is not recommended unless the day is cool; climbing on Fischer's Tower, or exploring the lower section of the gorge, would be a pleasant alternative. Pegs are generally not needed. A wide selection of chocks should be carried, including a few of the larger hexentrics or Friends. Protection is generally excellent except in the rotten bands.

Hell's Gate provides one of the few remaining places in Kenya where you can walk among the herds of plains game. Buffalo, zebra, eland, hartebeest, Thomson's gazelle and baboons are usually seen. Lion and leopard, hardly ever but you might just see a cheetah. In addition to abseiling on the cliffs of the gorge, we also organize walking and bicycle safaris. Camping is permitted in here and there is a campsite (minimal facilities) left of the main wall.

    1 DAY:  MAU MAU CAVES
The caves are a historic site which were used as a hideout by freedom fighters at the time of colonial struggle in Kenya. The caves are located 18 km south of the equator, inside the thick Mt. Kenya forest, which pose themselves from overhanging rock outcrops. The cool and calm environment provides favourable conditions for touring this place under organized nature walks.

    GUIDE PROFILE
I, James M. Kariuki is a licensed professional guide who is a native of Kenya, born and raised at the foothills of Mt. Kenya. I am able to show you Mt. Kenya and Kenyan touristic sights like no outsider can.

Growing up as member of the Kikuyu tribe which calls the foothills of Mt. Kenya and Aberdare Ranges home, I first climbed Mt. Kenya while I was only 16 years, then a high school student. I later climbed again at the age of 18 and reached point Lenana for the first time.

My love for the mountain and nature was short lived when I joined the Kenya Air Force and worked as an Air Force officer and left as a Sergeant in 1995 after 12years.This love made me go back to Mt. Climbing.

While in the military, I learnt various safety procedures like First Aid, Day and Night Navigation, Compass and Map Reading. I also did a Junior Leadership & Management course. All these proved very useful during my climbing and customer/clients relationship. Further to this, I joined the American National Outdoors Leadership School (NOLS) where I attained a Diploma in National Outdoor Education Programme 5 (NOEP).

I have a love and understanding of my country's beauty. My expertise will make every trek and safari memorable. Learn about the flora, fauna, geography, history, people and culture of our country which has over 42 tribes and dozens of religions and beliefs. As a guide, I carefully plan each detail of your trip, offer proper advice and briefing to ensure that all your dreams come true as you experience the wonders of Kenya.
My hobbies are mountaineering, biking, traveling & reading. I am widely traveled in East Africa, Europe and USA through the courtesy of my clients. I was invited in the USA as guest speaker to give lectures on African cultures, mountain climbing and safaris. Here, I trekked part of the Appalachians Trail (Vermont-Maine), climbed Mt. Cube (New Hamshire, USA), Mt.Tom (Woodstook, Vermont, USA), visited Mark Twain and Merramec Caves (Missouri, USA) among other places.

    I have done more than 200 ascents to date on Mt. Kenya summit and 28 on Mt. Kilimanjaro's Uhuru peak, not to mention Mt. Elgon, Aberdare Ranges, Mt. Meru in Arusha, Tanzania among others.Other than being a NOLS and Mt. Kenya National Park certified guide, I am also a member of;

  • The East African Wildlife Society
  • The St. John's
  • The Eco-Tourism Society
  • Honorary member of the Rotary Club of Woodstock, Vermont-USA

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THE TERM 'SAFARI'?
Safari is a Swahili name that means adventure journey or travel. Initially, it was taken to be the hunting expeditions to Africa but has now become a more eco-friendly form of adventure for people of all ages and walks of life. For you traveling to Africa, Safari has become the dream vacation of a lifetime, combining adventure with total comfort to ever-increasing travelers. Visit Africa's most beautiful game reserves, seeing hundreds of rare birds and mammals from your chauffeured safari vehicle. Relax in comfortable lodges surrounded by scenic valleys and plains.

Time takes on a new meaning as you learn to sit quietly listening to the sounds of Africa. The balance of nature will no longer be empty words you will see it daily in the drama of animals fighting for their survival and coexistence.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO ON A SAFARI AND MT. CLIMBING?
All Year Round! But it also really depends on the type of animals you wish to see. Certain reserves have good game viewing all year round but others will have particularly good elephant sightings or other migratory animals at different times of the year.

It is generally felt that the African winter (June - August) is the best time to go on safari, as the grass is dry and vegetation sparse making game viewing easier. It is also the time when animals are on the move looking for food and water. In Kenya and Tanzania, you have the memorable opportunity of witnessing the migration of over two million animals. For mountain climbing it"s all the year round except during the long rains April- mid May.

Nationals of certain countries do not require visas - this depends on the country you are visiting. It is advisable to check with the Consulate of the country that you intend visiting for the latest visa and entry requirements.

    WHAT SHOULD I PACK?
Safari dress is comfortable and casual -layers are recommended. Keep it simple and bring things you don't mind getting dusty. After you have booked your safari, we send you apre-departure information through emails to help you prepare for your safari.

Temperatures in winter are generally mild but can become considerably cooler in the evening, so pack multiple layers of clothing to ensure you stay comfortable on afternoon game drives and walks. It goes without saying that the standard safari gear must include a broad brim hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent. In some areas malaria is prevalent. Before you go on safari, consult your doctor for the necessary anti-malaria medication.

WHAT IF I WANT A CUSTOM SAFARI?
We would be delighted to work with you to help you and your family, friends or organization plan the best possible safari to match your interests and budget. We organize custom safaris for professional photographers, honeymoon couples and families.
